On Chapter VII: Hope and Sorrow, Sevendust open their doors to such guests as Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy and American Idol's Chris Daughtry, a move that stretches the album's sound past the usual limits of alternative metal. Daughtry may be a popular figure in the hard rock world, but he's also synonymous with the glitzy TV show that helped launch his career, and his presence here points to Sevendust's desire to tap into that same market.

Chapter VII marks the first time Sevendust has employed guest musicians since 2001’s Animosity, which is appropriate since a somewhat experimental nature also links the two albums. The guest sure to raise the most eyebrows is Chris Daughtry, the former American Idol contestant who now fronts his own hugely successful eponymous band. He appears on “The Past” and if his presence sends a few more fans Sevendust’s way, I’m all for it. Besides, the song still sounds like Sevendust and duets, whether they featured outside collaborators or former guitarist/songwriter Clint Lowery, were common for the band in the past.

‘Chapter VII: Hope and Sorrow‘. Morgan, love the screams man, always have, but it was clear with ‘Alpha‘ it had gotten out of control. ‘Chapter VII: Hope and Sorrow‘ sees Rose taking a much needed backseat, his screams implemented modestly to squeeze extra angst out of certain parts and rightfully allowing Lajon to have the floor and paint his provocative vocals across the remainder of the band’s instrumental genius.
